Can Eliminating Smoking and Increasing HDL Cholesterol Levels Decrease the Risk of Macular Degeneration?

A new study published in The Archives of Ophthalmology has shown that eleven or more pack-years of smoking increased the risk of early AMD by two-thirds, and every 5 mg/dL increase in HDL lowered the risk by almost 10%.
The study suggests an opportunity for developing preventive approaches to reduce the risk of AMD later in life.
