Can a Healthy Diet Reduce Cataracts in Women?

A recent study has found that women who eat foods rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals appear to have a lower risk of developing cataracts.

The study looked at dietary intakes for more than 1,800 postmenopausal women and found that those who ate the overall healthiest diets had a 37% lower risk of nuclear cataracts. The women in the cohort were enrolled in the Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study (CAREDS), an ancillary study of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI).

They had filled out food frequency questionnaires at enrollment between 1994 and 1998, which assessed their overall intake of a variety of foods including fruits and vegetables.
