Will Development of a Corneal Prosthesis Made of Plastic Revolutionize Corneal Transplants?

For many patients with diseased or damaged corneas, a corneal transplantation could restore the ability to see. However, there is a shortage of donor corneas.
Recently, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in Germany announced that Dr. Joachim Storsberg has developed material and a production process for a corneal prosthesis made of plastic. The new plastic corneal implant may soon offer patients with the chance to see again.
Dr. Storsberg’s solution consists of a hydrophobic polymer material previously in use by in use in ophthalmology for intraocular lenses.
