Can Lutein Intake Slow the Progression of Retinitis Pigmentosa?

As reported on MedPage Today, a recent study has found that supplementation with the carotenoid lutein slowed the progression of visual field loss in patients with retinitis pigmentosa who were also being treated with vitamin A.

Researchers found evidence to support the use of 12-mg/d lutein supplementations among adults with typical retinitis pigmentosa who were also taking 15,000 IU/d of vitamin A palmitate and eating one to two servings of oily fish per week.
