What Are the Advantages of DSAEK Over PKP?

As reported on MedPage Today, in a study conducted earlier this year comparing the outcomes of Descemet’s stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) versus penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in conditions with moderate risk of graft failure (primarily Fuchs’ dystrophy or pseudophakic/aphakic corneal edema), researchers found that DSAEK provided comparable longer-term success with a lower risk of endothelial cell loss than originally thought.

Researchers noted that DSAEK offers key benefits over PKP. Because it uses a smaller incision, DSAEK  requires far fewer stitches, and is associated with faster healing and more rapid visual recovery, and lower risk of astigmatic changes and eye loss.

On the other hand, graft detachment was a risk uniquely associated with DSAEK.
