Can I Mix Avastin and Lucentis to Treat AMD?

June 9, 2010

My husband has had four avastin injections for macular degeneration and has seen no particular improvement. He is only 45 and it breaks my heart to think that he will lose his sight.
Should he now try Lucentis?

Can you use both Avastin and Lucentis at the same time? Can they be mixed like this?

dr wong- what disease are you referring to? cnv secondary to myopia/histo? csr?

  • While I agree that 45 years old is too young for macular degeneration, there is a very similar macular disease that behaves very similarly.

I would first ask your doctor if the retina is still leaking, if so, many retina specialists may consider trying Lucentis at this point. While the two drugs are similar, it might be worth trying. If nothing else you have tried everything available.

You may also inquire if steroids might be helpful, again, if the retina is still leaking.

    All the best,

    R. Wong, M.D.

no evidence that lucentis is better. in fact, it seems that doctors only use lucentis to avoid any medico-legal problems, as avastin has not been fda-approved. i think just about everybody consider avastin and lucentis equivalent, and many researchers use avastin in their published studies. so, i regret to tell you that switching to lucentis after failure with avastin 4 times is not going to help. i know that stinks-sorry.
but mac degen at age 45 is really very very uncommon. i recommend a second opinion re the diagnosis.
