April 27, 2010

Has much research gone into familial Drusen and will it eventually turn into macular degeneration in either form?

I don’t believe this is true as I have had dominant familial drusen from age 30-40, and it is progressing every year. My scans show huge amounts of drusen(hundreds) and the distortion I am experiencing grows every year. As of yet I have not experienced the wet side of the condition. I am 40 now and I cannot drive at night anymore and use a reader to enlarge print.

i haven’t read much lately about familial drusen, also called dominant drusen. the odds of losing significant vision or converrting to wet amd is very low. But if you are worried, consult a specialist.

  • It is my experience that Familial Drusen are not related to macular degeneration, that is, while many non-retina doctors may worry about familial drusen, there is no worry that it will lead to macular degeneration.
