UK Researchers Using Intense Lasers to Perform Structural Analysis of Corneas

Science News Daily recently reported that Professor Keith Meek, Head of the Structural Biophysics Research Group at Cardiff University in the UK, has been using extremely intense synchrotron X-rays to perform structural analysis of the cornea. By shining specially tuned X-rays onto corneal samples, Professor Meek’s group has been able to map the orientation and thickness of collagen in corneas both with and without keratoconus.
According to Professor Meeks, his group’s research advances two goals. First, it promises greater insight into the structure of the cornea at the molecular level, thereby suggesting methods for improving corneal surgery. Second, the research will advance development of an artificial cornea by generating more detailed maps of corneal structure than ever before.
