LASIK for Child With Lattice Degeneration, Myelinated NF, and Amblyopia?

December 21, 2009

My daughter has on Right eye (-)0.9 SPH, -0.3 CYL 30 Axis &Retina specialist has comment “Diffuse areas of lattice degeneration+myelinated NF & Amblyopia.” Some have advised not to go for Lasik due to Improper pressure on retina (no refractive surgery advisable) whereas some suggest to correct the vision up to (_)0.2 after verifying. Is lasik advisable or of more risk?

  • Dr. Ari Weitzner

the suction ring used in lasik places pressure on the vitreous which can cause retinal tear in small minority of patients, esp those with lattice. it makes no difference how much of the myopia you correct. its a very small risk- you have to make a judgement call if its worth it. it wont correct amblyopia.
at -9-3×30, she is a poor candidate for lasik, anyway- the likelihood of 20/20 vision is quite small. she may be better candidate for the intraocular toric contact lens

  • I would consult with your ophthalmologist/retina specialist. There is not enough information to make a reasonable comment.

LASIK does not put pressure on the retina, so I am a bit confused. In cases of amblyopia, the ultimate eyesight can not be improved with LASIK. LASIK will just reduce the dependency on glasses or contacts.
