Novel Measures of Cardiovascular Health and its Association With Prevalence and Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: The CHARM Study

Medscape recently published the abstract of a study undertaken to “determine if novel measures of cardiovascular health are associated with prevalence or progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).” The introduction to the study notes that “age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in elderly Caucasians in the US, Australia and other industrialized nations, and that the prevalence of AMD rises dramatically with age (e.g., 27% of people aged 90 and older have the more severe form of AMD).” As the population ages and life expectanices grow, the incidence of AMD will necessarily increase. The study was undertaken to identify risk factors for AMD with the hope of identifying strategies for primary prevention.

The surprising result was that better cardiovascular health was associated with increased risk of prevalent AMD and progression.
