Is Ranibizumab Superior to Laser for DME?

November 15, 2009

The end of laser for diabetic macular edema? I think so. A six month trial published in Ophthalmology comparing ranibizumab to laser showed clear superiority (not even close) to focal/grid for diabetic macular edema. I honestly think I will start to offer this to my patients as first line treatment- I hate the laser’s destructive properties, especially when the edema is so close to the fovea.

  • I share your optimism.

It is not clear in whom or how often we should be giving these injections, but there is tremendous interest in the “retina” world for anti-VEGF and diabetic macular edema.

Long-acting sustained release technology is next!!

  • but cost-effectiveness?
