A new femtosecond laser device by LenSx was approved by the FDA to make foolproof capsulotomies- a nice thing to have (especially yesterday when my resident got an Argentinian flag sign the moment he entered the capsule). Of course, no ASC is going to buy this thing just for capsulotomies, but since this laser can make precise corneal incisions for astigmatism, it may be worthwhile for some refractive surgeons. Also, this laser can break up a 1 or 2+ cataract into little cubes or mush, and thus can be removed with I/A. Once it can be used for 4+ cataracts, it will be the end of phaco.
