I am not attending this meeting, but am watching both the web and following “Tweets” from those attending the sessions.

Here are a few interesting news releases from the first two days, as well as an update on the CATT Study and one doctor’s opinion about a new technology for treating AMD that I learned about from “Tweets” on Twitter.

Ellex to Deliver New Generation Ultrasound at AAO

Ellex Medical Lasers Limited (ASX: ELX), a global leader in the design and manufacture of ophthalmic laser and ultrasound systems, announced that it will introduce the latest version of the Eye Cubed(TM) diagnostic ultrasound system at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

The new generation Eye Cubed(TM) offers added functionality, including an intuitive software interface with user-friendly Windows-based operation; expanded measurement options via uniquely shaped calipers; improved export and import functions, as well as a host of other features.

Customized A-Scan and B-Scan modes in the new generation Eye Cubed(TM) make it suitable for both retinal sub-specialists and anterior segment surgeons. In addition, cataract surgeons benefit from the inclusion of an A-Scan feature which eliminates corneal compression and transmits ultrasound waves through dense cataracts. A wide-field anterior segment B-Scan gives practitioners an unprecedented view of the lens apparatus, including zonules and ciliary muscles, areas nearly impossible to visualise with other ultrasound systems.

Presbia Names Ophthalmic Surgeons Gordon and Maloney to Medical Advisory Board

Presbia, a company focused on surgical solutions for presbyopia, today announced that ophthalmic surgeons Dr. Michael Gordon and Dr. Robert Maloney have agreed to join to its Medical Advisory Board. Drs. Gordon and Maloney will join Prof. Ioannis Pallikaris, widely regarded as the “father” of LASIK surgery, who was appointed as chair of the recently formed Board.

Presbia, will introduce its Flexivue micro-lens to the medical community for the first time in the United States at the joint meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) beginning Friday, Oct. 23, in San Francisco. Offering a safe, effective, permanent yet reversible correction of presbyopia, Flexivue is a three-millimeter-diameter optical lens that is implanted in the cornea, by the creation of a pocket using the same kind of femtosecond laser routinely used for LASIK surgery.

According to Dr. J. Kitchens, Tweeting from the Retina SubSpecialty Day Session at the 2009 AAO Meeting, Dan Martin, head of the CATT Study, reported this morning that the study is almost finished recruiting. To date, 1130 patients are enrolled and the 43 clinics involved hope to have 1200 patients by the end of next month, at which time the study will be closed.

Tweet from the 2009 AAO Meeting — Oroya/IRay

IRay is the most novel concept presented so far today. Will be interesting to see how it does in larger studies. Great talk. – J.Kitchens

In office radiation procedure with IRay (Kaiser). Amazing concept. In office, 10-20 minutes. Reduces need for re-treatments. – J.Kitchens.

(I am in touch with the company sponsoring this work, Oraya, and hope to write a complete story about this innovative X-Ray treatment for wet AMD following the AAO Meeting. The company is headed by Jim Taylor, formerly of Carl Zeiss Meditec, and an old friend.)
