What Are the Treatment Options for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

October 18, 2009

I have  dry eyes  and  I must use oral doxycycline for my disease:  MGD ( meibomian gland dysfunction).

But  I’m intolerant, because that caused  candidiasis.

Could I cure with altered doxycycline, for example  with Periostat ? Or topical antibiotics?

Can I cure with topical tetracycline or azithromycin?

I need a medicine I can use for months without cause resistance of bacteria.

    Dear Doctor,

I will try to cure my MGD with topical Azithromycin .
BUT In Europe in Europe, where I live, there is no AzaSite ( azithromycin 1%) .
There is AZYTER( azithromycin 1,5%) , more strong .
So, Can I use Azyter for long time ? how long and in what dosage?
( without causing bacterial resistance.. )

Where I live (Italy ) I cannot cure well my disease .
In fact a doctor , for my dry eye e my temporary intolerance of
artificial tears, closed my lacrimal points with diathermy.
That unnecessary closing ,stopped clearance of tears and caused continuous
inflametions end infections , disorder of eyelids , then my disease : MGD.
My eyelids was injiured by the closing end that made worse for my disease.
So, to improve the condition of the eyes end glands , have to reopen
    the lacrimal channels surgically ?
What you Recommend about to use HRT ( hormonal replacement therapy ) to
improve lacrimal glands o meibomian gland ?
What do you think of the possibility of using cortisone systemic in combating the inflammation meibomian glands?
    Thanks

i advise restasis and azasite- they are helpful in combating the inflammation and dysfunction of meibomian gland disease, and they are topical, not oral. use steroid drops for brief periods ( like up to a week) for breakout episodes. consider flaxseed oil and omega 3 oils (healthfood stores) on a daily basis to help keep the oil in the meibomian glands smooth and liquidy.
