Who Sees CMV Retinitis Anymore?

Posted By Dr. Ari Weitzner On September 8, 2009 @ 9:13 pm In Retina | Comments Disabled

When I was a resident (1989-1992), I saw a fair amount of CMV retinitis, and AIDS patients were dying at a rapid clip- it was sad and awful. Today, I think residents hardly ever see CMV retinitis, and would not recognize the classic “pizza” retina. Kudos go to the drug companies and scientists who have made AIDS merely a nuisance for so many in the developed world( this is a double-edged sword, as many take AIDS too lightly now, convinced that they can live with it)- at the height of the epidemic, this would have sounded outrageous.
