Is Avastin Effective For Cystoid Macular Edema?

A small study was reported at ACRS this summer that indicates bevacizumab (Avastin™) may be useful in resolving cystoid macular edema (CME). 12 patients were included in the study who developed CME after cataract surgery and were nonresponsive to topical treatment including steroids and NSAIDs. The CME was present for at least a month and the participants were given the option of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab.

In all 12 patients, the vision improved within one week of injection. Mean visual acuity improved to 20/20 by 3 months.

It is postulated that bevacizumab decreases the vascular permeability leading to CME.
