Can Air Bubbles Left in the Anterior Chamber During DSAEK Damage Endothelium?

In DSAEK, one leaves an air bubble in the anterior chamber in order to improve the chances of the graft adhering to the host cornea. Researchers in this month’sa AJO suggest that the air buble may be toxic to the endothelium and may contribute to endothelial cell loss. The benefits must be weighed against this risk.
