Diabetic macular edema may be successfully treated with Avastin® (bevacizumab) predicts a small retrospective study published in this months Ophthalmology.  Researchers treated 139 eyes of 115 patients with up to 15 injections over a 2 year period.

Over half (51.8%) of the patients had improvement in vision.  97.1% of  the patients had improvement or were stabilized over the 2 year study.  Both visual acuity and macular thickness were measured.

The researchers caution that this was a retrospective study, but the findings are consistent with many similar studies we have seen over the past year.  At some point, bevacizumab needs to be measured against focal photocoagulation for the treatment of diabetic macular edema.
