Do Aspheric IOL’s Reduce Depth of Focus?

A recent study demonstrated a downside to aspheric IOL’s- the reduced asphericity improves mesopic vision and contrast sensitivity, but also reduce depth of focus. Turns out the asphericity of the eye can come in handy when trying to read, which we often find with our cataract (usually nuclear sclerosis)patients- often they get both good distance and reading vision initially before the cataract gets too dense. The asphericity induced by the cataract actually improves the near vision without interfering too much with distance. This is not to be confused with myopic shift (second sight), where distance vision deteriorates while reading vision improves.
