Are Aspheric IOL’s Better Than Spherical?

Posted By Dr. Ari Weitzner On June 10, 2009 @ 4:53 pm In Cataract | Comments Disabled

An article in AJO describes the results of aspheric IOL implanted in one eye, and a spherical in the fellow eye. Vision was equal as well as contrast sensitivity under most conditions, except under scotopic- there, the contrast sensitivity was better with the aspheric. Seems to me that under normal conditions, patients won’t appreciate the difference, especially if they are not demanding, ie, sedentary, decreased mental status etc. But for younger, more demanding patients, the difference may be real, and is probably worth the extra cost to the insurance plans that are paying for it.
