In my previous writeup on intrastromal ablation ^[1], I included the work being done by Dr. Luis Ruiz, working with 20/10 Perfect Vision, in using the FEMTEC femtosecond laser in producing intrastromal incisional cuts in the mid-stroma to perform refractive corrections, relying on RK-like redistribution of forces to reshape the eye to correct presbyopia (IntraCOR).

Now, Dr. Rupal Shah of India has kindly allowed me to reproduce her report of using the Zeiss-Meditec VisuMax femtosecond laser to create and remove lenticles from the cornea to correct up to 10 diopters of myopia in a procedure they call FLEx (Femtosecond Lenticle Extraction).

As I pointed out in the introduction to Dr. Shah’s report, this approach is not new, as I reported in early 2001 of IntraLase working on the development of lenticle removal back in 2000. However, Dr. Shah and Zeiss-Meditec seem to have worked out the technique so that it now produces reproducible results.
